@waterhugbunny People To People?

@petrucci15

“Mandarin is the most popular language and it has many dialects, Cantonese is one of these dialects.”

Fail…

By bradsbrain on June 8th, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Cantonese came first. Cantonese was the first Chinese language. Mandarin was created to simplify Chinese, as it is less complicated in both written and verbal forms. That’s why Mandarin is often referred to as “Simplified Chinese”.

I cannot trust any information in a video that would get such a fundamental fact wrong :(

@TheFuckengland Stupid? Disgusting? Sounds like you’re talking about America. China has one of the best education systems. Not to mention that many of them come over here to America and steal jobs. It may not be the cleanest city, but it’s definitely not the most disgusting.

中国的朋友们,请不要再给某些无知的人解释任何东西。对于骂人的帖子直接标注垃圾,最重要的是不要浪费你们宝贵的时间。如果你觉得我说得对,请复制粘贴散布,以节约国人的时间。谢谢。

@mrowland92 I totally agree with you.

By mrowland92 on June 9th, 2010 at 12:25 am

@aleksandrus11 There are aspects where it is entirely different, though it is still technically under the same umbrella as Mandarin. While Mandarin and Cantonese are both dialects of Chinese, they have come to be treated as two individual languages because of the sheer number of people that speak them and the differences you mentioned. But they are still technically two dialects of the same language.

By aleksandrus11 on June 9th, 2010 at 12:37 am

@mrowland92 It is different in so many ways. In Mandarin, there are 4 tones, but in Cantonese, 6. Cantonese has several initial and final consonant sounds that Mandarin doesn’t even have.

By aleksandrus11 on June 9th, 2010 at 1:23 am

@mrowland92 Well, that’s where I would disagree with you all. It is not merely a dialect. The Beijing accent is a dialect of Mandarin. The Taiwanese accent also is. But Cantonese, while using the same characters, is almost completely indistinguishable from Mandarin. I speak Mandarin. Often, when listening to someone with an accent, such as a thick Beijing accent it is difficult to follow. But I can’t understand one word of Cantonese. It seriously is a totally different spoken language.

By mrowland92 on June 9th, 2010 at 2:17 am

@aleksandrus11 They are not different languages, rather they are both different dialects of Chinese. Just like sichaun dialect, kunming hua, etc. those just happen to be the two most commonly spoken.

By TheFuckengland on June 9th, 2010 at 2:59 am

the most disgusting city with the most stupid people, no exaggeration.

By Karlosus on June 9th, 2010 at 3:40 am

Cantonese is a dialect. It sounds completely different to Mandarin, but it’s not classed as a language in itself. My girlfriend is Chinese and a Mandarin speaker. She can understand Cantonese language and written characters, but at the same time finds it hard to follow.

It’s like the Scottish dialect of the English language. Sometimes you may not be able to understand certain words, but it is English.

By aleksandrus11 on June 9th, 2010 at 3:40 am

Good lord, I never said Cantonese wasn’t a dialect of Chinese, I only said it wasn’t a dialect of Mandarin, which it isn’t. I also was referring to the spoken language which isn’t just different pronunciation, it is completely different and unrecognizable to native Mandarin speakers. This has nothing to do with what characters they use. Oh, and I speak Mandarin, and have lived in China, so maybe not totally ignorant, I don’t know.

By jamiekuo86 on June 9th, 2010 at 4:07 am

@aleksandrus11

I just can say you are ignorant ! if you dont know chinese culture, you have no right to say that ! do you know the Cantonese pronounce is the most similar pronounce as old chinese pronounce! even than the north chinese pronounce now chinese used ! and the cantonese use the same character and grammar as mandarin chinese! but the mainland use the simple chinese now, but every mainland chinese can understand traditional chinese!

@aleksandrus11 @aleksandrus11 Cantonese definitely is a dialect of Chinese language,Mandarin is also a dialect of Chinese language,they have same grammar,just the pronunciation is different。

BTW,Cantonese is not a dialect of Mandarin,C&M,they are all dialect of Chinese language,like London accent and American accent are all dialect of English。
